Call us cynical but we always assume the annual 'X Factor in crisis' rumours are all just part of the big Simon Cowell ratings-boosting machine. But new 'head judge' Gary Barlow has confirmed that all is not well on talent show TV.
The Take That star admitted that the boss had been in touch, saying: "Simon said if you can work at the show and make it 10 per cent better each week, by the end of the series of the show will be 50 per cent better."
Yeah... good luck with that Gary.
While he admitted he and fellow judges Tulisa, Kelly and Louis Walsh need to "up our game", Gary had a few harsh words for the contestants too.
"The trouble with the artists this year is they are all obsessed with Twitter and headlines," he told The Sun. "It feels like they are all getting a bit above themselves."
Er... has he never seen the show before?
"I had a word with all my contestants and I know Kelly Rowland had a word with hers," Gary added. "It's reality check time."
Hmm... we think he's talking to you, Frankie Cocozza.
The boys' mentor went on: "On Monday morning I was thinking I'd made the wrong choice picking him. I'm doing well with Craig and Marcus but it's Frankie, I just can't ever track him down."
Did you try the London nightspots, Gary?
But it's when it comes to Louis and his annual novelty act Jonny Robinson that Mr Barlow really lets loose.
"I think I have seen [Louis] once at the house with the contestants," he revealed. "He is in Dublin all week. He doesn't really care.
"Louis says his acts are focused. That is just panto talk - he uses the same lines every week and if I say a good line he nicks that too."
Finally, Gary added: "The joke is over for me with Jonny. I'm not like Louis, he's just here to have a good time on a Saturday night. I'm here to find a star and it's not Jonny."
What do you think - was Gary wrong to put Frankie through, is Jonny a joke and can the X Factor survive without Cowell? Leave your comments below...
