Top nine celebrity wig wearers

Celebrities are a vain lot. Most of them refuse to grow old gracefully - and for both the male and female variety that often means donning a syrup/rug/wig to disguise their thinning locks.

So from toupees and thatches to wigs, weaves and odd receding hairlines, we take a look at the celebrity world's nine most suspicious heads of 'hair'...

9. Jason Gardiner
OK, so his wig wearing ways may not be half as well known as the rest of our celebrity wig wearers, but Dancing On Ice judge Jason Gardiner makes it into our list for inconsistent way he wears his rug.

From one series to the next of DOI you never quite know whether Jason's wig will make an appearance. For series one it was there, sitting like a pet gerbil atop his head but by series two it was gone - replaced by his proudly bald head.8. Tyra Banks
While she may be weave-less at the moment, one of the best ever moments on America's Next Top Model occurred in an episode when Miss Tyra's wig slipped to reveal her lace cap (when a wig is sewn onto a lace skull cap) underneath.

The supermodel blames her fake hair for ruining her sex life, saying that she doesn't spend the night with men for fear of her wig falling off in bed. Though we're sure that would be a bigger fright for the men involved than it would for Tyra.

7. Bruce Forsyth
One of the most famous toupees in the business they call show belongs to Mr Entertainment himself, Bruce Forsyth. Bruce's toupee is as well-known as his 'nice to see you' catchphrase and his larger-than-life chin.

The Strictly Come Dancing presenter doesn't deny the piece of turf he wears on his head though, and in 1997 said: "If anyone makes a joke or a remark about my hair, I say: 'Can't you think of anything else?' My hair is the oldest joke in the world."

And for that, 'Sir' Bruce, we salute you!

6. Barbara Windsor
EastEnders matriarch Barbara Windsor makes no secret of her wig-wearing tendencies - her famous pineapple hairpiece is almost as famous as she is.

But less well-known is Babs's treasured "cap 'n bits", which are something of a legend at the EastEnders studios.

They take the form of a baseball cap with a ponytail attached at the back - which Ma Mitchell can often be seen wearing on her off-days. We don't have a picture, but watch 'Enders and you might just spot them in action.

5. Terry Wogan
Broadcasting stalwart Terry Wogan's toupees are legendary on the showbusiness circuit.

The Irish favourite reportedly has three wigs - one with a freshly cut look, a second that's a "growing out a bit" 'do and a third that is in need of a haircut - to keep his "hair" looking as real as possible.

4. Declan Donnelly
During the recent series of Britain's Got Talent, Dec - the half of Ant and Dec that isn't the one with the forehead - shocked viewers with his full-and-thick head of hair.

The same full-and-thick head of hair that just weeks earlier on the pair's gameshow, Push the Button, appeared so fine that it was almost see-through.

Dec's hair caused so much interest that the News of The World printed a story asking just where the pint-sized Geordie's luscious new barnet had come from. Was it a wig, or had he discovered thickening spray? The mop thickens...

3. Dolly Parton

There aren't many ageing singing divas that don't wear wigs: Cher, Tina Turner, Whitney... but none of them are quite as famous for their wigs as the pneumatic country legend that is Dolly Parton.

As well-known for her over-the-top "hairstyles" as she is for her blow-up chest, Dolly once said she would never leave the house without her wig, "unless my husband is dying of a heart attack, and even then I would think about it."

2. Sir Elton John
Sir Elton John was one of the early celebrity pioneers of the male hair transplant when his balding head turned into a thatch in the early '90s.

Some said it was a weave sewn into his scalp (ouch), some said it was a transplant, others said it was just a bad wig.

After drawing comparisons to Worzel Gummidge, Sir Elt has since toned down his hairpiece in recent years - although it's still a mighty impressive barnet.

1. John Travolta
But our absolute favourite celebrity wig wearer has to be one-time heartthrob, John Travolta.

Sitting somewhere between a toupee and a lace wig, Travolta's headpiece is the stuff celebrity picture editor's dreams are made of.

In its time John's wig has been styled high, shaved, slipped back a bit too far and changed colour from mahogany to deep blue-black.

In fact, the only thing it's never looked is natural. The luscious-locked Danny Zuko would most certainly not approve!
